...It was an honor to be selected as the Official Artist of the 70th Iroquois Steeplechase. Many of my fellow artists that I have idolized throughout my career have captured the beauty and excitement of this prestigious sporting event.

My oil painting titled The Steeplechase was auctioned off during Friday's Jockey Club Gala to assist the Monroe Carrell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt. The top bidder was Mrs. Calvin Houghland whose husband was the longtime Chairman of The Iroquois Steeplechase and the winning jockey of the 1943 running of the Iroquois.

This year's $150,000 Calvin Houghland Iroquois (Grade 1) was won by last year's champion, Irvin S. Naylor's Tax Ruling, who withstood a challenge from Slip Away at the 18th and final hurdle at Percy Warner Park. Trained by Brianne Slater and ridden by amateur rider Darren Nagle, who had three winners on Saturday, captured the spring season's richest hurdle race by five lengths.

NASHVILLE, Tenn.,— Award-winning and internationally-known equine artist Thomas Allen Pauly has been chosen as the featured artist for the 70^th running of Nashville’s Iroquois Steeplechase. Pauly will create a commissioned piece to be offered at the invitation-only Jockey Club auction on Friday, May 13 – the day before the races run on Saturday, May 14. Pauly’s art will also be used in the design of various items such as t-shirts and prints that will be available for sale online and at the Steeplechase Boutique on race day.

In 2006, Churchill Downs selected Pauly as the “Official Portrait Artist of the Kentucky Derby.” His portrait of the legendary horse, Barbaro, was featured as the Derby’s Official Commemorative Print that same year.

“We are eager to see what Thomas creates for the 70^th running of the Iroquois,” said Libby Cheek, executive director for the Iroquois Steeplechase. “He has beautifully depicted some of the world’s most famous horses and jockeys.”

An associate member of the internationally acclaimed American Academy of Equine Art, Pauly recently was invited to have his second solo art exhibit at the Kentucky Derby in Louisville, KY. Working primarily in oils and watercolors, Pauly’s paintings are known for their accuracy, energy and celebration of achievement.

The Fine Art of Racing and The Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF) will feature
the artwork of nationally renowned equine artist Thomas Allen Pauly at the Night of Silk
Derby Party, a live auction benefiting The Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF)
on the evening May 7 at the Galt House hotel in Louisville, Ky.

Mr. Pauly, who returns to Churchill Downs for his solo art exhibit during the 2011
Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks, has donated this exclusive offering of a
personalized 20" x 24" oil portrait featuring a horse, jockey, and trainer or racing silks of
the top bidder's choice.

"Being an avid supporter of the PDJF," Pauly says. "I was honored when Nancy LaSala,

The Fine Art of Racing and The Game is pleased to announce that the artwork of equine artist Thomas Allen Pauly, who has portrayed many of the greatest
Thoroughbreds and jockeys in the sport of horse racing, will once again be
featured in a solo art exhibit at the 2011 Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks.

"I have always been fascinated by the excitement and the beauty of horse racing
and the regal jockeys up on their elegant champions," Pauly says. "I have photographed and sketched every Derby since 1999 and I still get choked up during the playing of My Old Kentucky Home as they go to post."

The show will run May 6 - May 7 at the historic Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The Fine Art of Racing gallery will be located on the 5th floor Finish Line Suites Terrace.

The Game will present Pauly's collection of Thoroughbreds and jockeys inspired by his extensive travels throughout the country. The exhibit will feature original oils, watercolors and graphites. Among the highlights of the exhibition is the portrait of three time Kentucky Derby champion jockey Calvin Borel in the silks of last year's Kentucky Derby owner WinStar Farms. Since 1978, award-winning equine artist Thomas Allen Pauly has portrayed some of the finest horses and jockeys in the country. Born and raised in Chicago, his love of the sport emerged in the Sportsman's Park's winner circle when his friend's horse named Rusty Win captured the feature race by five lengths. He was hooked.

Pauly depicted the who's who in Thoroughbred racing in a portrait series commissioned by Arlington International Racecourse. Recently, I was commissioned by editor Joan Colby of the Illinois Racing News to portray Shore Breeze, the 2010 Illinois Stallion of the Year. He is a 13 year old brown horse (Danzig - Sea Breeze, by Gulch) bred by Morven Stud, Ltd. He stands at John F. Haran's Eagle Valley Farm North...This is my second portrayal of Shore Breeze.

The Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF)

The Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF) is a 501(c)(3) public charity that provides financial assistance to some 60 former jockeys who have suffered catastrophic on-track injuries.

Since its founding in 2006, the fund has disbursed over $2.5 million to permanently disabled jockeys, most of whom have sustained paralysis or brain injuries.

Many of the jockeys we serve were injured while in their 20s and 30s and face decades of living with a disability. They have lost their income and the opportunity to build a financial cushion sufficient to support them and their families.

The medical needs of our disabled jockeys are great and may include daily assistance from a caregiver. In today's healthcare environment, costs continue to escalate -- posing still more challenges to individuals who courageously test their limits every day.

The PDJF strives to reach out to everyone in the Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse industry, their business partners and the great fans of this sport for their support.

Our long-term goal is to create an endowment that will enable the fund to be self-sufficient.

Stationed paddock-side on the apron level of Arlington Park, one of the world’s extraordinary equine artists and photographers, Thomas Allen Pauly, arranges a temporary “studio” where all can watch this master at work.

A large crowd gathers on this Saturday afternoon, as they do every weekend at this most beautiful of racing facilities, making a perfect backdrop for the artist to make the final touches on his portrait of 2010 Kentucky Derby winner, Super Saver.
Pauly intended to paint in the paddock this day, as he will throughout the summer meet, but inclement weather took issue with his plan. Pauly smiles as he enjoys the parade of people watching him create. They admire his work, some inquire about it, but all are simply mesmerized by his latest masterpiece. After all, few people have had the experience of observing an artist on-the-job, let alone the man who was named in 2006 as the “Official Portrait Artist of the Kentucky Derby.”
Some wonder out loud as they pass the portrait, “Is that the Kentucky Derby winner? “Yes, this is Super Saver He’s almost done, but I still have to put the mud on him,” Pauly told a young boy, who appears to be about 10 years old.
“It was raining that (Derby) day, and he got covered in mud during the race. I add the mud effect last, and with a toothbrush,” Pauly explained, not worried in the least about the ice cream cone the kid’s holding while the child zooms in for a closer look. The youngster exclaims “Wow, you were there?,” and runs off to share this information with his family.
Almost to the count of five, the boy’s family arrives to share the experience when the grandfather inquires, “What’s that black thing you rest your hand on?” The man behind the easel says to him, laughingly, “Good question. It’s actually a curtain rod. It works well as a rest for my hand when I paint. It was white at Churchill Downs, and everyone thought it was a cane, so I covered it with black tape,” he explained.
And that’s the essence of the artist, Thomas Allen Pauly. His first official Kentucky Derby portrait was in1999 of Charismatic, and it remains one of the artist’s favorites. Having spent just a few minutes with him, “charismatic” aptly describes Pauly. He is entirely bemused by the impact his work has on the beholder.
It was a chance introduction to racing that propelled this man to where he is today, he who has taken paint and canvas and re-created moments of thoroughbred racing, from the victories of champions to a still life of jockey’s boots, to perfection.
Invited to the old Sportsman’s Park to watch a harness horse owned by the father of a high school pal, the horse, Rusty Win, did indeed win, with Pauly receiving a winner’s circle photo that ultimately inspired him to draw horses. While his previous artistic endeavors were caricatures created while in high school, the first one of Richard Nixon from MAD magazine, Pauly created a drawing of Rusty Win. He sold it to his friend’s Dad, the horse owner, and his passion grew from there.
This passion has carried Pauly far, quite literally. He travels extensively to attend and photograph racing from Longchamps in France to Meydan in Dubai. He insists on taking photographs himself, so he can translate “his moments” to canvas. “I shoot at the barrel,” Pauly said, “as it gives me the depth that I want to see. People and horses, actually,” he laughed.
The magic of Pauly’s still life portraits move the mind in a different direction. The observer can nearly feel the horses and riders on the track, the emotion of the victories and defeats, furlongs ridden. Pauly has a particular sense for depicting jockeys, and the silks they wear. He gives great care to detail for these masters of the game, and pays close attention to the tiniest details, such as a spot of mud on the glove of Calvin Borel aboard Super Saver.
In all their peacock finery, the majesty of every jockey has a home deep in Pauly’s heart, “especially when the jockey goes up on his horse,” he said. ”I pay close attention to all the detail involved, the hands on the withers, and the connection of horse to rider,” Pauly said, reliving one of many great moments in his mind.
Pauly explained, “Someone asked me how I concentrate at the Kentucky Derby when they play ‘My Old Kentucky Home.’ This year was the first time that I actually stood and listened, because usually I’m down in the trenches shooting photos. I felt the moment, but then I went back to taking shots.”
His studio loft located in Chicago is a shrine to horse racing. Jockey’s silks, photos, saddlery, a whip made especially for him by Rene Douglas, and a caricature done of Pauly by Pierre E. “Peb” Bellocq, the legendary Daily Racing Form artist, adorn the walls.
Pauly also finds solace and inspiration at his 100-acre farm situated on a lake in Hayward, Wis. It is here where he painted the jockeys’ caricature, which was a key element to auction items to aid the Permanently Disabled Jockey’s Fund (PDJF) “Dining with the Dynasty” fundraiser event held at Arlington Park in August 2009.
Twenty-three Hall of Fame jockeys attended and were the subjects of part of Pauly’s work for the event. He created a seven foot canvas called “The Gate” that depicts each Hall of Fame jockey who attended the “Dynasty” event in the starting gate detailed down to eyeglasses and aging. Pauly designed the event invitations, and a collectable program with inserts that featured each jockey’s biography and caricature. In addition, he designed a limited edition collectable poster.
While Pauly began his love affair of horses 32 years ago, the list of accolades and achievements grows. 2010 was the 11th consecutive year that he photographed the Kentucky Derby. Earlier this year, Pauly added to his legacy when a collection of his paintings were seen in the “Undercover Boss” (CBS-TV series) episode featuring Arlington Park. These included his classic titled “Red, White and Blue” positioned alongside the desk where Churchill Downs Inc. COO Bill Carstanjen sits while disclosing his “true colors” at the end of the episode.
In 2011, he will be the “Official Artist of the 2011 Iroquois Steeplechase” in Nashville, Tenn.. Future plans are in place to illustrate a book on international racing with noted racing writer Victor Zast. His portrait of Super Saver is complete, and now graces his website at www.horseartist.com.
Pauly’s work is downright magical, even for a non-racing enthusiast. Recalling the ancient Bedouin proverb “God took a handful of southerly wind, blew on it, and created the horse” is truly something of an equally cosmic nature that seems to guide each Pauly brushstroke.
So it is that the racing world has been gifted with yet another great one, who, like so many of his subjects, makes horse racing’s moments real for eternity.

A gentleman approach my gallery and said he wanted to buy my piece titled "Winter Solstice". "I want it delivered ASAP". I asked him for his business card... "George Steinbrenner doesn't carry cards", I preceded to give him a pen and a pad of paper which he wrote his name and address while mumbling something. I always thought that it would have been so much easier for him to carry business cards.

George Steinbrenner passed away yesterday and I will always remember that special moment.

To this day, I always carry cards.

One of the top honors that an equine artist could receive is a commission by the owner to portray their fine champion. Unfortunately, this usually happens after the horse is retired and one does not get to experience their subject's racing career. Owner Craig Henderson loves horse racing and he loves to share racing with his friends...On the 32nd anniversary of my introduction to the sport, I was commissioned by Craig to portray Put on a Show. She is a very talented 3 year old champion filly by Rocknroll Hanover, she's a millionaire and happens to be a harness horse. Although it has been years since I painted a Standardbred, my heart and roots are in harness racing.

On Thursday, I received a call from Mr. Henderson inviting me to watch his filly race. Not just any race, it is the $666,000.00 Fan Hanover Stakes. Not just any track, it is Mohawk Raceway in Toronto, Canada. And not just any plane, it is a Beechcraft Hawker private jet.

We arrive at Chicago Executive Airport at 2:30 pm and we take off at 2:39pm. No security, no x-ray machines, no shoe removal and you could bring on bottle water. Wow! This is the only way to fly...We arrive 52 minutes later in Hamilton, Canada and limo to the track. Weather is perfect. Mohawk Racetrack looks great and is packed (compliments of casino gambling). We have tables reserved on the terrace overlooking the finish line. Drinks and fine food were abundant. The host was beaming.

It was like going back 32 years, clicking hundreds of pictures of the breed that started me on this journey. Talking with Hall of Fame driver Dave Magee, who has 3 of my paintings, including my very first harness driver portrait (see image). Meeting driving legend John Campbell and reminiscence about his portrait that his wife commissioned me to paint 22 years ago. Experiencing the paddock again, forgetting that numerous races are harnessed here at once. The barn was filled with much energy, excitement and anticipation.

"Put on a Show" is #5 in the 5th race. The favorite at 1:1. She is trained by Chris Ryder, driven by Tim Tetrick. One minute to post: I decided not to photograph her race from my usual position at the finish line. I wanted to experience the race with Craig, his co-owner Richard Young and their many friends. Nerves are setting in, everyone is pacing(pun intended). And They're Off...she breaks slowly from the gate and is 7th at the clubhouse turn. Her usual style. At the 8th pole she is is flying on the outside like a Hawker jet. Just misses at the wire. An awesome race, with a little quicker pace she would have won going away. But, it wasn't meant to be... She is the best filly in the sport and she will get them next time.

10:30pm: the car takes us back to our jet. I am home by midnight.

WOW!!! One of the greatest experiences I have ever had in horse racing. Thank you Craig for "Putting On A Great Show" and returning me to my roots.

Dennis Hopper - Actor, Artist and Racing Fan

...I just heard that Dennis Hopper passed away today at 74 years old. Mr. Hopper was a great actor, an avid racing fan and a prolific painter. I had the opportunity to discuss artwork with him on numerous occasions. This is a photo of us at the 2003 Kentucky Derby.

What a great experience I had exhibiting at this year's Kentucky Derby. It is an extremely rare opportunity for an equine artist to be invited to have a one man art show at the historic Churchill Downs Racetrack during the Kentucky Derby and Oaks. Except for the huge storms that arrived on Derby day, I couldn't ask for anything better. The gallery spaces was absolutely perfect and the management/sales teams were incredible. It was great to see many of my longtime collectors as well as meeting new ones.

My exhibits were located at the 3 main gates, displaying 38 of my original oils, watercolors and graphites. I had the wonderful opportunity to have my oil painting of "Derby Day" published as the "Official Commemorative Print of The Kentucky Derby 136" along with numerous licensed Derby products.

But, the highlight of the weekend was painting on location and discussing my portfolio and painting style with collectors, racing fans and aspiring artists. My portrait of "Zenyatta" was a crowd favorite, especially since her rival Rachel Alexandra came in second in the La Trioienne Stakes earlier on Oaks day.

Although I didn't get an opportunity to shoot many of the undercard races, I did get to photograph my 12th Derby/Oaks. This year, I had a team of 5 shooters capturing many of the pivotal scenes of the 2010 Derby. My photos will be published by GIA Marketing as licensed Derby/Oaks Winners Prints.

I would like to thank The Game, Gloria Irwin and the team of Gia Marketing for making this event an amazing success. Also, a very special thanks to Shawn Toth for assisting me with my artwork displays.

LOUISVILLE, KY (April 29, 2010) --- I will have the great honor to present a one man art exhibit at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky during the 2010 Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks. The show will run April 30 - May 1 at several gallery locations throughout the grounds of historic Churchill Downs and at the Kentucky Derby Museum on May 2, 2010.

My exhibit will feature original oils, watercolors and graphites along with numerous official Kentucky Derby licensed art products. The Pair O' Lakes Lodge in Trego, Wisconsin (pop. 885) was a perfect venue to share this special event with my friends over beer and the lodge's famous fish fry. Not only was it an honor to have my work displayed in pivotal scenes, but it was great to see my friends at Arlington Park and view horse racing in a positive light. Thank you to Undercover Boss, Arlington Park, Producer Rachelle Mendez and CBS for including my artwork in their #1 hit reality show.

A Legendary Weekend

That had to be one of the most amazing weekends that I ever experienced in my 31 years in horse racing.

It was an incredible honor to spend time with 23 of the greatest jockeys in the sport. 16 of them are Hall of Fame inductees...among their totals are: 95,639 winners, 22 Derbies, 2 Triple Crowns and 8 decades of riding the greatest horses in the world. We all came together to help support the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF) and the Racetrack Chaplaincy at the Dining With The Dynasty fundraiser held on the eve of the Million at the beautiful Arlington Park Racecourse.

Nancy LaSala, Executive Director of the PDJF and Tony Petrillo, VP of Arlington Park commissioned me to portray caricatures of the 23 legendary jockeys breaking out of the starting gate at Arlington. My painting titled "The Legendary Start" was reproduced as a commemorative art print which was autographed by the jockeys and was also included in the program featuring each legendary jockey. It was much fun watching the jockeys run around getting autographs from each other and exchanging stories from the past. The original painting was auctioned off at the luncheon by CBS sportscaster Howard Sudberry. Also, my video tribute of "The Jockeys" premiered at the fundraiser.

I am very proud to be part of the PDJF family. It was founded in 2006 and it brings much needed financial assistance to a group of athletes who have given so much to the sport of horse racing. The PDJF is committed to working with both industry and medical research groups to improve the safety of both the human and equine athlete as well as medical research projects dedicated to reducing catastrophic injuries.

The Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund and the Racetrack Chaplaincy of America jointly announce the expansion of the Dining With The Dynasty event to be held in the Governor's Room at Arlington Park on Friday, Aug. 7, 2009.

The Dining With The Dynasty, a ticketed luncheon event, affords event attendees a once in a lifetime chance to gather, dine and converse

with legendary jockeys from Thoroughbred racing's glorious past and who have created some of the most exciting moments in horse racing history.

The luncheon will feature many special events including both a silent & live auction for racing memorabilia and other classic items; legendary jockey autograph sessions and special appearances on both the day of the event and the following day, Sat., Aug. 8, which is Arlington Million Day will accompany the Dining With The Dynasty luncheon on Friday.

Mix and Mingle with Earlie Fires, Ray Sibille, Pat Day and More!

Have you ever dreamed of spending a day at the races with 23 of the riding greats of the past? No, I don’t mean with you in the stands and them on the track.

I mean in a social setting, where you can meet and greet, mix and mingle, collect their autographs, and more, and for a good cause. Your chance at such a very special day is coming soon.

On Friday, August 7, Arlington Park is hosting a headline event to benefit the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF) and the Racetrack Chaplaincy of America (RCA). Dubbed Dining with the Dynasties, the event will be held in Arlington’s Governor’s Room, a private facility on the west end of the third floor of the building with panoramic views stretching from the downtown Chicago skyline to the east, across the broad expanse of Arlington’s main track and turf course, out to the west over the barn area and beyond, as far as, well, the eye can see.

The exclusive event will be from 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM. There will be an open bar, and the first-class buffet will be from noon to 2:30. The afternoon will also include live auctions and silent auctions where you can bid on an array of racing memorabilia and related items, perfect to display in your office, den, or rec room. Autograph sessions are also scheduled. You will have ample opportunity to associate with, first hand, individuals who have been the elite of their profession, spanning decades.

Primary emcee for the event will be well-known Chicago sportscaster Howard Sudberry. Since coming to Chicago in 1984, Sudberry has been a fan of Chicago horseracing.

Highly-regarded Chicago-based equine artist Thomas Allen Pauly is creating the unique invitation package for this event. The collectible program features inserts containing each Dynasty jockey’s biography and caricature, perfect for autograph collecting. Pauly also is designing a limited-edition, collectible poster to commemorate this event.

“I’m thrilled to have been invited to be a part of this event,” revealed Pauly. “These jockeys have been heroes to me during my life as a racing fan.

“I’m really honored to design these keepsakes for this function,” continued Pauly. “In fact, my original artwork, which will be used to produce the invitation package as well as the commemorative poster, will also be auctioned off to raise money for the PDJF and the RCA.” Everyone will want to see the original artwork for the poster – it is two feet high and six feet wide and contains a caricature of all 23 jockeys.

Nancy La Sala, wife of jockey Jerry La Sala, is Executive Director of the PDJF and is on the board. “We held our first event like this last year, but it was on a much smaller scale,” she explained. “The RCA and the PDJF wanted to grow the event into something bigger this year, while still keeping the luncheon to an intimate size.

“After the exclusive luncheon there will be a public autograph session and more silent auctions from 2:30 to 3:30,” La Sala continued. “We will likely be at the bottom of the grand staircase, just inside from the statue of John Henry and The Bart.”

Hall of Fame jockey Pat Day, now retired, has been a national spokesperson for the RCA since 1984. “It has been a very important calling, one that has brought a lot of joy and fulfillment to me,” explained Day from his home in Louisville, Kentucky.

“Now, I am really looking forward to this event at Arlington,” Day continued. “With the RCA and the PDJF combining with Arlington Park, we are able to put together a grand event – what a splendid time it will be. Just think how miraculous it is to get these 23 people together, riders whose careers, collectively speaking, span five decades. Oh, we’ll have a great time, swapping stories, mingling with the guests, and reminiscing. Some of us have gotten together in the past, like for the recent race with retired jockeys at Santa Anita, but never on such a grand scale as this Dining with the Dynasties will be.”

In order to keep this event as personal and intimate as possible, while still achieving fund-raising goals, attendance will be limited to 100 fans. Tickets for this event, which are all-inclusive of the extravagant buffet, open bar, collectible program and poster, and access to the 23 featured jockeys, are $300. Proceeds go to benefit the PDJF and the RCA. The PDJF states that it is a registered, nonprofit, 503(c)3 public charity. Inside Track: Layer by Layer

Thomas Allen Pauly’s love for painting subjects of Thoroughbred racing was developed somewhat like the intricate portraits he produces from his Chicago-area studio: layer by layer.

Pauly found from an early age that he could translate art from photographs, and the second medium eventually became another passion. As a photographer shooting for such publications as Illinois Racing News, Pauly not only gained access to top horses and jockeys at Triple Crown races and Breeders’ Cup World Championships, but also at such international events as Royal Ascot, the Arc de Triomphe, Hong Kong Cup, and Dubai World Cup, among others.

“My eye as an artist has taught me to be a good photographer,” said Pauly, who turned 49 earlier this year. “And as I go along, doing race pictures are a lot of fun.”

But Pauly’s primary focus is on his paintings -- even more so since retiring in February following a 30-year career as a repairman for AT&T.

“Every day was like a struggle, because it wasn’t what I wanted to do,” he said. “When I would come home after working eight hours, I would go to my studio to paint, sometimes until 2 a.m.”

But his workaday job was not without at least one highlight as it relates to his artistic pursuits. Pauly said he had been trying to sell a portrait of grade I winner Stevie Wonderboy to his owner, entertainment mogul Merv Griffin, when he finally received a call closing the deal.

“I remember I was up in the ceiling running this wire at the (Chicago) Board of Trade,” he said. “It was a god-awful day, everything was going wrong. And then I got this call from Merv Griffin’s office and they ended up buying the painting. It was very surreal to have my head stuck in this drop ceiling and talking to Merv Griffin’s office.”

Pauly has no idea how many pieces of artwork he has produced, but he clearly remembers certain milestone productions. There was the caricature of President Richard Nixon he did in fifth grade that initially sparked his interest in art, a piece modeled after a similar effort of legendary cartoonist Mort Drucker of “MAD Magazine” fame.

Then in 1978, he sold his first piece of artwork – a drawing of a harness racehorse named Rusty Win, who was owned by the father of one of Pauly’s friends. Pauly and others had gone to a race at old Sportsman’s Park, and when Rusty Win posted a victory, the burgeoning artist ended up in the winner’s circle. It was Pauly’s first time at a horse race.

“And when I got an 8-by-10 (photograph), I was so moved by the situation I decided to do a drawing of the horse,” said Pauly, who sold the drawing to his friend’s father.

From there, demand for his efforts only grew. In 1989, he completed a still-existing caricature montage for Arlington Park, which is located on the third floor near the press box. In 1990, he was commissioned to paint 1989 Illinois Horse of Year Western Playboy, and the resulting portrait was given to the owners as a trophy. Since that time, each owner of an Illinois HOY has been awarded a Pauly trophy portrait.

Pauly was also one of 11 international artists commissioned a few years ago to produce portraits of all the Dubai World Cup winners. His portrait of ‘96 winner Cigar in 2007 fetched $50,000 at the Dubai World Cup Art Auction and Exhibition.

“That one really stands out,” Pauly said.

Another of his favorite portraits is of Charismatic, who won the 1999 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) and Preakness Stakes (gr. I). “It was my first Derby, and he was a great looking horse,” said Pauly, who keeps that portrait in his studio.

The artist works in a 500-square foot loft studio filled with racing silks, saddles, saddle cloths, and bridles. “I have a lot of showings there,” he said. Many of Pauly’s portraits are done in oil, using a layering technique of glaze and paint he said is akin to how the “Old Masters” painted. Pauly was also commissioned by Churchill Downs as the official portrait artist of the 2007 Kentucky Derby, which is best remembered as the crowning victory of the ill-fated Barbaro. Pauly produced the portrait within four or five days after the Derby so that it could be given away on the track’s fan appreciation day, which was held after Barbaro was injured in the Preakness.

“(Churchill officials) were debating on whether to give it away, but he started to get better, so they said let’s do it,” Pauly said of the heavily-publicized rehabilitation effort given Barbaro. “People were lined up the parking lot waiting to get the poster. They were real appreciative.”

One of Pauly’s favorite subjects is jockeys, and his portfolio includes portraits of many of the all-time greats. “I enjoy doing portraits of jockeys right before they get up on the horse, or when the jockey is up on the horse, showing the withers of the horse and the neck,” he said.

Pauly has hooked up with noted turf writer Victor Zast to produce a book about international horse racing. “I’m going to do 36 paintings – places, people, racetracks, and the horses involved with it,” he said.

Great Big Gray Horse

My first real memory of a horse, although it was stuffed was at 5 years old. Our family drove up to the Wisconsin Dells for our summer vacation. My mother, Jean put me up on a great big gray horse and dressed me up like a little cowboy. Boy, I was a happy little kid. But, days later when I found out that it was once a real horse and not a fake, I was devastated.....

My first real memory of a racetrack was years later when driving pass Maywood Park. I asked my dad what that was..."It's a racetrack, only bad people go there". Why would he say that? After my dad passed away, I found out that he was a real small time bookie. He ran book out of his Chicago Tribune newspaper stand on the Northwest side. Ma said he told me that story to keep me from ever going there. It didn't work. Nothing would.

Greetings and welcome,

This is my first time blogging... I am in the process of designing my new website www.horseartist.com and I thought that a blog would be a welcome addition.

I am an equine artist who has been painting the beauty and excitement of international horse racing since 1978. My earliest memory of anything artistic was in the 5th grade. A classmate named Paul Cronin brought a Mad Magazine to Palmer School and passed it around in class. When it finally came to me, what I saw would change my life forever. There was a caricature of Richard Nixon drawn by Mort Drucker. It was such a funny illustration, I was drawn to it. I never had any desire to draw before that moment but I took out my #2 pencil and proceeded to copy it. It must have turned out pretty good because I kept asking him to bring more & more Mad Mags(boy, I wish I still had that drawing). I started buying my own magazines at resale shops and actually developed a huge collection. Some of them are from the 50's. Mort Drucker was a huge influence in my career (in fact, the 3 dots at the end of my name is how he signed his). It was his drawings at Mad that taught me me how to draw caricatures, which 18 years later would prove to be very beneficial when Arlington Park Racetrack came calling.

My life at the track began on June 17, 1978. My friend, David Gonzales was having a party at his house when he announced that his dad's harness horse "Rusty Win" was in Sportman's Park's 8th race. About 20 of us jumped in our cars and made it by minutes before the race was off. The horse won by 5 lengths and all of us crammed into the small winner's circle. I was hooked.

I couldn't get enough of the track so I started calling in sick at Bankers, Life and Casualty. Eventually, I got fired. Here I was, 18 years old just out of high school. No job, no money and no aspirations. But, I sure loved the ponies.

A couple months later... I was sitting on my mother's front porch wondering what I was going to do with my life. Then Mrs. Pritzer walks by. She tells me to get off my butt and apply at AT&T. I did, passed the test with flying colors (just out of school, couldn't do that now) and promptly turned down their offer. It was for a night shift position, which of course would interfere with me going to the track. They eventually offered me a day job. I accepted and in February of this year after 30 years with the same company I retired. But, throughout those 30 years, it was a difficult struggle between my corporate job and my passion for painting horses.

My first drawing of a horse was of "Rusty Win". I used the win picture as reference and I rendered it in color-pencils. It was pretty awful, but Dave's dad bought it anyway. That was the start of my wonderful equine art career.

As Arlington Park's track announcer Phil Georgeff would say:
"This race isn't over, please hold all tickets"
